    Starting college can be like entering an entirely new world. You have more freedom than you’ve ever had before and you are in total control over your own life. This increased responsibility however can make you susceptible to some serous pitfalls. Read the following article to learn what habits to avoid in order to have a successful college career.

Many students experiment with alcohol or sex during their college years, but if you don’t want to do these things, don’t let anyone pressure you into them. Your college experience should be about having fun, exploring who you are and preparing for your future via your classes–not about doing things you don’t truly want to do.

    Take at least one general ed requirement your first semester and get it out of the way. When there is a class you need in order to graduate, it is best to take it sooner rather than later. You don’t want to have to take classes with the kids when you’re a senior!

    Student’s discounts are one of the best perks of college, especially if you need to save money. Check with your student resource center or ask an adviser for a list of perks. Many local restaurants, movie theaters and bookstores offer generous discounts when you present a student ID. This allows you to save money and show school pride.

    Always know how to get a hold of the police on campus. Most schools have a special number for contacting campus police or security, and knowing the way to reach them is important. Ideally, you will never need to contact them. However, you’ll be glad to have it if something goes awry.

    Study during the day. It is best to study when you are awake and at your most alert. Studying at night or when you are already fatigued can lead to you spending more time than is usually necessary to comprehend something. Studying while you are wide awake will help you retain information faster and more easily.

    Do not wait until last minute to study. When you know you have an upcoming test, study a little each night. By waiting to study until the night before your test, you risk burning yourself out. Chances are you will go to take the test and your mind will draw a blank.

    A good tip that will help you with your studying is to make use of flash cards. It may sound juvenile but flash cards really do make a big difference when you’re studying for a brutal test or exam. The more you have in your studying arsenal, the better you’ll do.

    Do more than take electives to broaden your horizons. Participate in extra-curricular activities on campus. To help you decide on your major, join a variety of clubs. There are a ton of things you can do on campus. Try one thing every week that is new to you.

    As was stated in the beginning of this article, you have the freedom to do whatever you want in college, but with this increase in freedom comes greater responsibility. Make sure to implement the tips you’ve just read into your everyday life so that you can have a successful experience while having fun at the same time.
